Dreaming of a Bike Ride

Despite a hint of winter today, the weather has been close to warm enough here in the Toronto area to bike ride as if it’s April. Claire Harmer’s green utility bike (above) is a lovely reminder of the full biking season to come.

Travel Diary: Friend of Cecil Beaton

These travel sketches are from the diary of Stephen Tennant (1906-1987), a friend of the photographer Cecil Beaton, recording a holiday in Gibraltar, Morocco and Tangier in 1948.  Such colorful composition.  Go here for more from these diaries, found in the St. John’s College library archives.

‘The Advantages of Living in London’

This unusual sketch from 1840, sold by Grosvenor Auctions for £900, is a letter with a sketch titled ‘The advantages derived by living in London.’  It’s illustrated with scenes of a drunken man falling out of his coach, lying in the gutter and being arrested by the police, and scenes relating to school (a seated boy in a dunce’s hat, a patrolling schoolmaster, etc.)
