I love this artist’s style, and also the story behind this sketch from Atherton, California, posted a few hours ago on Suhita Shirodkar’s Flickr site.
Sitting on a bench at the Rose Gardens, Filoli Estates, sketching. Unfinished piece. I was told it wasn’t allowed. Seriously? I am outdoors in a garden. I have a little sketchbook in my lap, am holding onto a small watercolor set that is about the size of an iphone. There are a zillion people all around with HUGE cameras and lenses taking pictures. That’s fine but sketching isn’t?

wow. that’s crazy talk!
No kidding. I think she did a great job even though it’s unfinished. Thanks.
that makes me angry! why isn’t it allowed? i wish she had kicked up a stink. I bet it was some guy talking nonsense. if she had escalated a stand off i imagine she’d have been allowed.
It’s very odd, isn’t it, especially with her point that people with cameras were making images all around her. Thanks for taking the time to voice those thoughts.
I wrote to Filoli to ask what their policy was. Especially strange since I spent a whole afternoon sketching there before ( http://sketchaway.wordpress.com/2012/03/24/flowers-at-filoli/ ) and they posted the link on their facebook page. Makes me wonder if it was one person trying to make a point…
Thanks for letting us know Suhita. We all love your sketch (and the ones on the link you included, lovely). Perhaps someone was just misinformed, or trying to be powerful, or . . . . Hope you get an answer. Really appreciate the comment.
